How to add captions to a video on iPhone
Most people watch short videos with the sound off, so captions decide whether a talking clip gets watched or scrolled past. Typing them by hand takes forever. Auto Captions in Video Grid Collage listens to the speech in your clip and writes the subtitles for you — you fix a word here and there and pick a style.
Step by step
Open your video
In Video Grid Collage (free on the App Store), tap + on the start screen, choose Image or Video and pick the clip with speech — or open a collage you're already working on.
Select the clip and tap Captions
Tap the video on the timeline, then Captions. The button shows up for clips that have sound.
Choose the spoken language
Pick the language people speak in the clip. The app recognizes the speech and adds a captions track that follows the timing of the words.
Fix any words
Tap Edit to correct names, slang or brand words, and use Lines to show one or two lines at a time.
Style the captions
Change the font, size, color and Stroke outline, set the alignment and position, and add an Animation so each line pops in.
Export
Export in 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts. The captions are burned into the video, so they show on every platform and in every player.
Captions that people actually read
- Keep captions in the middle of a vertical frame: the bottom is covered by buttons and descriptions on TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
- Short lines read faster. Switch Lines to one for fast talkers.
- Use a thick outline or a contrasting color so white text stays readable over bright footage.
- Proofread names and numbers — speech recognition is good, but it can't guess how you spell a brand.
