How to do split screen on TikTok

TikTok has its own ways to show two videos at once — Duet, Green Screen and Overlay — and its sister editor CapCut adds more. Each is built for a slightly different job. Here's what each one can do, how they compare with a dedicated collage app, and how to post a split screen or video collage to TikTok.

Short answer: TikTok's Duet puts your video next to another TikTok (side by side, top and bottom, react or three screens), Green Screen puts you in front of a photo or video, and Overlay lays one clip over another. To show several of your own videos side by side or in a grid, each trimmed to the right moment, make the collage in a collage app such as Video Grid Collage and upload it to TikTok like any other video.

When TikTok's own tools are enough

  • Reacting to someone's TikTok: Duet puts your video next to theirs — side by side, top and bottom, react or three screens.
  • Adding your take after someone's clip: Stitch plays a few seconds of their video, then yours.
  • You in front of a photo or video: the Green Screen effect.
  • One clip in a corner of another: Overlay in TikTok's editor.
  • Several of your own videos side by side or in a grid, each trimmed to the right moment: that's the job of a collage app — the steps are below.
You'll need: an iPhone (iOS 18+) · the free Video Grid Collage app · ~5 minutes

Step by step

01

Pick the TikTok format

Open Video Grid Collage (free on the App Store). In the Format section of the start screen, pick TikTok and then Video (9:16) — or start from any vertical template.

02

Add your videos and photos

Choose clips and photos from your library or Files — the grid fills itself. Side by side suits comparisons and duet-style videos, 2×2 grids suit recaps, stacked splits suit tutorial + result.

03

Make the first second count

TikTok viewers decide in the first second whether to keep watching. Trim every clip on the timeline so something moves immediately — no dead frames at the start.

04

Add a hook

Put a short title near the top with Text, or subtitles with Captions. Keep it clear of the right edge and the bottom, where TikTok's buttons and caption sit.

05

Export and upload

Export in high quality, then in TikTok tap +, choose Upload and pick the video. Add a sound from TikTok's library if you like, and post.

Can I post it on TikTok?

Yes. The collage is an ordinary video file in your Photos app, and it's yours: your free first project and every Pro project export without a watermark, and the app doesn't limit where you publish. TikTok accepts videos made in any app.

The only thing to check is what's inside. Your own footage is always fine; songs and other people's clips need the right to use them. For music, export the collage without it and add a sound from TikTok's library when you post — that's also how you ride a trending sound.

Frequently asked questions

How do you do split screen on TikTok?
Inside TikTok, Duet puts your video next to a posted TikTok — side by side, top and bottom, react or three screens. To put several of your own clips side by side or in a grid, make the split screen in a collage app and upload it as a regular video.
Can I put two of my own videos side by side?
With Duet, the other half has to be a video that's already posted on TikTok (it can be your own). To pair two clips straight from your camera roll, each trimmed separately, a collage app is the simplest route.
What size should a TikTok video collage be?
9:16 vertical, 1080×1920. Export directly in that ratio so TikTok doesn't crop or letterbox your grid.
Can I add a TikTok sound to the collage?
Yes. Export the collage without music, then pick a sound from TikTok's library when you post.
Is it allowed to post a video made in another app?
Yes. TikTok accepts videos from any app, and Video Grid Collage puts no restrictions on your exports. Just make sure you have the right to use the music and any clips that aren't yours.
