How to make a picture-in-picture video on iPhone

Picture-in-picture puts a small video on top of a bigger one: your face in the corner of a tutorial, a reaction over a clip, a close-up over the wide shot. In Video Grid Collage any photo or video can float above your main footage as an overlay.

You'll need: an iPhone (iOS 18+) · the free Video Grid Collage app · ~5 minutes

Step by step

01

Start with the main video

In Video Grid Collage (free on the App Store), tap + on the start screen, choose Image or Video and pick the video that should fill the frame.

02

Insert an overlay

Tap Insert → Overlay → Image or Video and choose the clip or photo for the small window.

03

Move and resize it

Drag the overlay into place and pinch to resize it. Guides help it snap neatly to the edges and the center.

04

Style the window

Select the overlay to round its Corners, add a Border, or tap Remove BG so only the person floats over the video.

05

Sync the clips and the sound

Line both videos up on the timeline, and use Sound to decide which audio viewers hear.

06

Export

Export up to 4K in the aspect ratio your platform needs.

Frequently asked questions

Can the small picture be a photo?
Yes. Overlays can be photos or videos, and you can add several of them.
Can the overlay be animated?
Yes. Select it and tap Animation to fade, slide, zoom or pop it in and out.
What's the difference between picture-in-picture and split screen?
A split screen gives each clip its own part of the frame; picture-in-picture lays one clip on top of another. Video Grid Collage does both, even in the same video.
