How to make a video collage on Instagram
Instagram has several tools that come close to a video collage — Layout and Collage in Stories, Remix, the Dual camera and the separate Edits app — but each one solves a slightly different problem. Here's what each can do, how they compare with a dedicated collage app, and how to post the finished collage as a Reel, Story or feed post.
Instagram, Edits or a collage app?
| Video Grid Collage | Instagram app | Edits (by Instagram) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Several of your own videos playing at once | Up to 9 at once in 100 layouts, up to 100 clips per collage | Remix: your clip next to an existing Reel. Dual: front and back camera together | Overlays: stack clips and size them by hand |
| Photos in the same frame | Any cell can hold a photo or a video | Layout and Collage arrange photos in Stories | Photos as overlays |
| Trim and sync each clip | Each cell has its own timeline track | Basic trimming | Full timeline with keyframes |
| Captions and text | Auto Captions in dozens of languages, 20 fonts, animations | Captions sticker, text styles | Auto captions and fonts |

When Instagram's own tools are enough
- Reacting to someone's Reel: Remix puts your clip next to it as a split screen or picture-in-picture.
- Filming yourself and the scene at once: Dual records the front and back cameras together.
- A quick photo collage in a Story: Layout or Collage in the Stories camera.
- One video on top of another, a green screen or a cutout: Edits does it for free.
- Several of your own videos side by side or in a grid, each trimmed to the right moment: that's the job of a collage app — the steps are below.
Step by step
Pick an Instagram format
Open Video Grid Collage (free on the App Store). In the Format section of the start screen, pick Instagram and then Reels (9:16), Feed (4:5) or Square — or start from any vertical template.
Add your videos and photos
Choose clips and photos from your library or Files — the grid fills itself. Try other arrangements under Grid → Layout until they fit your clips.
Sync and style
Trim each clip on the timeline so the best moments play together, then adjust spacing, corners and background. Add a title with Text or subtitles with Captions.
Export
Export in high quality, up to 4K at 60 fps. The collage is saved to your Photos as a regular video.
In Instagram, tap +, choose Reel, Story or Post and pick the exported video. Add music from Instagram's library, a cover and a caption, then share.
Can I post it on Instagram?
Yes. The collage is an ordinary video file in your Photos app, and it's yours: your free first project and every Pro project export without a watermark, and the app doesn't limit where you publish — Instagram, TikTok, YouTube or a group chat. Instagram accepts videos made in any app.
The only thing to check is what's inside. Your own footage is always fine; songs and other people's clips need the right to use them. The easiest way to handle music is to export the collage without it and add a track from Instagram's library when you post.
Instagram-specific tips
- Keep faces and text in the top two-thirds of a Reel — Instagram's caption and buttons cover the bottom.
- For feed posts, 4:5 fills the most space in the feed. The profile grid shows a 3:4 preview, so keep the key frames near the center.
- Reels up to 3 minutes can be recommended to people who don't follow you — collages work best far shorter.
- Turn on Upload at highest quality in Instagram's settings so the grid stays sharp.
