How to remove sound from a video on iPhone
Wind, traffic, a conversation you'd rather not share — sometimes a video is better silent. To mute a whole video, the Photos app is enough. For anything more precise — one clip in a collage, just a few seconds, quieter instead of silent — you need a video editor.
Step by step
Open the video
In Video Grid Collage (free on the App Store), tap + on the start screen, choose Image or Video and pick your video. If it fills only the top half of the screen, tap Grid → Layout and choose the first layout — a single frame. You can also open a collage you've already made.
Mute the clip
Tap the clip on the timeline, then Sound → Mute. A speaker icon on its bar shows it's silent; tap Unmute to bring the sound back.
Mute only a few seconds
Move the playhead to where the noise starts and tap Split, then split again where it ends. Select the piece in the middle and mute just that.
Or turn it down
Tap Sound → Volume to lower the sound instead of removing it, and switch on Fade In or Fade Out for smooth starts and ends.
Add music (optional)
Tap Insert → Audio and choose a song from your music library or Files to play under the video.
Export
Export and share. Muted clips stay silent in the exported video.
Tips for sound
- Muting is not permanent: tap Sound → Unmute any time and the original sound is back.
- In a collage, mute every clip except one so viewers hear a single voice or song.
- Under music, lower the original sound to about 20–30% instead of muting it — it keeps the atmosphere.
- Mute a noisy clip and add captions, so viewers still get the message without sound.
