How to add text to a video on iPhone

A few words on screen turn a clip into a message: a hook in the first second, a label over each half of a comparison, a punchline at the end. Video Grid Collage lets you put text anywhere — over a single video or across a whole collage — and animate it without keyframes.

You'll need: an iPhone (iOS 18+) · the free Video Grid Collage app · ~5 minutes

Step by step

01

Open your video

In Video Grid Collage (free on the App Store), tap + on the start screen, choose Image or Video and pick your clip, or start from any template.

02

Tap Text

Tap Text in the bottom bar and type your words. The text appears in the frame and on the timeline.

03

Choose a font and size

Pick one of 20 fonts — mark favourites for next time — and set the Size so it reads well on a phone.

04

Add color and an outline

Pick a Color and add a Stroke outline so the words stay readable over any footage.

05

Place it and set the timing

Drag the text anywhere in the frame — it isn't limited to the grid — and set on the timeline when it appears and disappears.

06

Animate it

Tap Animation and choose how the text comes in and goes out: fade, slide, zoom or pop, with spring or bouncy timing.

07

Export

Export in the aspect ratio your platform needs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add text over a collage of several videos?
Yes. Text floats above the grid, so one title can span several frames.
Can I animate text?
Yes. Choose in and out animations like fade, slide, zoom and pop, and set their duration and timing — including spring and bouncy.
Can the app write subtitles for me?
Yes. Auto Captions turns speech into subtitles, which you can style like any other text.
