9:16, 1:1 or 16:9: choosing the right aspect ratio
Nothing quietly kills a good video like the wrong shape: bars on the sides, a crop through the action, a collage shrunk to a stamp. Aspect ratio is a one-tap decision — if you know what each platform actually wants. Here's the practical map.
The three ratios that matter
9:16 (vertical) fills a phone screen held normally. It's the native shape of TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Stories and Snapchat. Full-screen means full attention — no interface framing your video in dead space.
1:1 (square) is the feed shape. It takes maximum area in scrolling feeds, works on Instagram feed posts, and stays readable on both phones and desktops. For grid-style video collages the square is also the most natural canvas — tiles stay comfortably proportioned.
16:9 (horizontal) is classic YouTube and desktop. TV-shaped, presentation-shaped. On phones it's small inside a vertical screen, so use it only when the destination is genuinely horizontal.
Cheat sheet by platform
- TikTok, Reels, Shorts, Stories → 9:16, no exceptions worth making.
- Instagram / Facebook feed post → 1:1 (or 4:5 where offered) for maximum feed real estate.
- YouTube main videos → 16:9.
- Not sure where it'll live → export 9:16 and 1:1 and post each where it belongs.
Aspect ratio and collages specifically
Layout and ratio work together. Two vertical clips side by side naturally form a 9:16 frame. A 2×2 grid loves a square. A top/bottom split of two horizontal clips fits 9:16 beautifully. When a layout fights the ratio, tiles get thin and content gets cropped — if a layout looks cramped, change the ratio before you change the clips.
