# How to make a square video on iPhone

Square videos still work everywhere — in the Instagram and Facebook feed, in ads, in chats. The Photos app can crop a video to a square, but it cuts off whatever doesn't fit. Here's how to keep the whole picture, or put several clips into one square video.

**Short answer:** the Photos app crops a video to a square and cuts off the edges. To keep the whole picture, tap the square frame under **Single video** on the Video Grid Collage start screen; to combine several clips, tap **Square** under **Instagram** or **1:1** in the **Format** section. Fit your clips and export 1080×1080.

**You'll need:** an iPhone (iOS 18+) · the free [Video Grid Collage](https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6743649992?pt=123926799&ct=en-square&mt=8) app · ~5 minutes

## Step by step

### 1. Start a square project

Open [Video Grid Collage](https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6743649992?pt=123926799&ct=en-square&mt=8) (free on the App Store). For one clip, scroll to the bottom of the start screen and tap the square frame under **Single video**. For several, tap **Square** under **Instagram**, **TikTok** or **Facebook**, tap **1:1** in the **Format** section, or pick a layout in the **Square** section.

### 2. Add one clip or several

Pick your videos and photos. In a **Single video** project, several clips play one after another in the same frame, and **Insert → Media** adds more later. In a collage, each clip gets its own frame.

### 3. Fit or crop

In a **Single video** project, the whole clip fits by default — fill the space around it with **Background**, or pinch to zoom until it fills the square. In a grid, drag each clip to choose what stays in view.

### 4. Style it

Add a **Border**, round the corners, put a title on top with **Text** and add music with **Insert → Audio**.

### 5. Export

Export in 1080p (1080×1080) or 4K (2160×2160) and share it.

## Tips for square videos

- Two vertical phone clips side by side make a nearly square frame — in 1:1 only thin strips at their edges are trimmed.
- A 2×2 grid turns any four clips into a tidy square, whatever their orientation.
- Keep text inside the square with some margin, so it's not cut off in feed previews.
